Adventures of Huckle Berry Finn were written by Mark Twain. It is satirical novel. This novel was published in UK on 10 December 1884 and in 1885 in Canada. Chatto and Windus was the publisher of this novel. This novel is preceded by The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and followed by Tom Sawyer Abroad. The novel has made its place in the list of great American Novels. The novel is one of the first novels written in Vernacular English along with local colors of regionalism. This novel is the sequel of “The Adventure of Tom Sawyer”. This novel is written in first person format.
The first person in this novel is “Huck” who is a friend of Tom Sawyer. The book is famous for its description of people’s life and place along the Mississippi River. This novel is about entrenched attitudes, mainly racism. Since its publication this novel had received a lot of criticism. It was criticizes because of excessive use of coarse language. This book even becomes more controversial in 20th century because of continuous use of word “Nigger” despite the arguments that this book is totally anti-racist.

The main character of this novel is Huckle Berry Finn. He is about 13 or 14 years old. He is brought up by his father who is used to of drinking. It’s hard for Huckle Berry to fit in the society.
Douglas is a kind lady who is trying hard to civilize Huck. She believes that being a Christian it is her duty to help him. Huckle that starts living with Douglas Miss Watson is Douglas’s sister. Her behavior with Huckle is not very good. Tim is a slave of Miss Watson. Huckle Berry and Tim are very close. Tom Sawyer is Huckle’s best friend and is the main character of other novels of twain. He is probably the smartest kid in town. He is also the best fighter. Huckle’s father “Pop” is an alcoholic. He is always angry with his son for no reason. Another character includes Judith Leftus. She has a very small role in the novel. She helps Huck in his search for Tim.
Theme of this novel is about race and identity. People have criticized Tim’s character a lot. Several people have said that the novel reflects racism as word “Nigger” has been repeatedly used in this novel. Huck struggles a lot to fit in this society, especially because of 20th century social climate and the role it plays regarding his closeness to Tim. Throughout the story he has faced this society because of its own values but in the end he takes the decision which is morally correct in his eyes. This decision is totally opposite to the values he has been taught in his society. He selects his friendship and love with Tim.
Many scholars have discussed the role of Huckleberry Finn and his characteristics. Scholars suggest that role of Huck shows the relation between white and black culture of United States of America. This novel has been adapted in several films, music albums and stage shows. Films on this novel were made in the years 1917, 1918, 1920, 1930, 1931, 1938, 1939, 1954, 1960, 1968, 1972, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1985, 1993, 1994, 1995, 2008, 2011, 2012. Several novels were also written on this novel in the years 1973, 1983, 2005 and 2007.
Music albums were also made in the years 1926,2005 and 2009. This is indeed one of the best novel of its time with adventures and the problems faced by the boy who finds it difficult to fit in the society.
