Anne of green Gables was written in June 1908 by Lucy Maud Montgomery. This novel was written in Canada and was published in United States of America. This novel is followed by “Anne of Avonlea” which was written in 1909. Since the 20th century this novel has been considered as children’s novel. This novel revolves around the adventures of an 11 year old girl named Anne. Anne is an orphan and is mistakenly sent to middle aged brother and sister named Matthew Cuthbert and Marilla Cuthbert. The brother and sister want to adopt a boy who can help them on their farm. This novel shows adventures of Anne, that how she makes her way to school and with in the town.
This novel has been translated into 20 different languages, more than 50 million copies of this novel has been sold. The book is taught to students all around the world. Author wrote several sequels of this novel and a prequel of this novel has also been published.
Short Review of Anne of Green Gables
This novel has been adopted as animated series, television movie and film. Megan follows played the role of Anne in movie which was produced in Canada in 1985. Several plays and musical albums have also been made, based on this novel.
Montgomery’s own notes inspired her to write this novel. This had made these notes when she was a child. In these notes there was a couple who wanted to adopt a boy, but mistakenly a girl was sent to them. Instead of sending her back they decided to keep her. As a model for the face of Anne, author used a picture of Evelyn Nesbit which she had taken from New York’s Metropolitan Magazine. Author was also inspired “formula Anne”. This was an orphan series which was very popular at that time.
After the popularity of first novel Montgomery write sequels to continue the story of little girl, Anne. Anne of Avonlea, Anne of Island, Anne of windy, Anne of windy willows, Anne’s house of dreams and Anne of Ingleside shows story of life of Anne. She also wrote books to describe the life of Anne’s children’s. These books were Rainbow Valley, Rilla of Ingleside and The Blythes are quoted. Anne is also featured in the stories named Chronicles of Avonlea and further chronicles of Avonlea. A prequel was also written, before Green Cables in 2008 by Budge Wilson. He wrote this novel with the permission of heirs of Montgomery.
In 1919 a silent film was released “Anne of green Cables” directed by William Desmond Taylor. In 1934 and 1940 a black and white film based on this novel was also released.
In the years 1956.1957, 1958, 1972, 1975, 1985, 1987, 2000, 2005, 2008 and 2010 a television movie was also made on this novel. Television series were made in the years 1952, 1979, 1990-1996, 2000, and 2009.
Eight part TV series of this novel is also being made and will be broadcast in the year 2017 by CBC.
Radio dramas of this novel were produced in 1941, 1944, 1954, 1966, 1971 and 1977. Web series of this novel were also made in 2914-2016 and 2015-2016.
Because of its popularity this character “Anne” has been parodied by several comedy troupes. These Canadian comedy troupes include CODCO and Fran tics. This is indeed a very popular novel.
