This novel teaches kindness and humanity. Anna’s own life inspired her to write this novel. Anna was born in Great Yarmouth, when she was 14 years old she fell in the rain and injured her both ankles, while coming back from school. She became unable to walk for the rest of her life because of mistreatment of injury. Unable to walk she began learning about horses. She used to spend her time driving her father to and from work.

She began respecting horses; she used to help her mother to edit her work. Her mother was a very popular author of that time. She met many European authors and writers’ while visiting to spas. She wrote this novel during the years 1871 and 1877. Her health started declining during those years and after 5 months of publication of only novel of her life she died. Anna’s mother sold this book to the local publishers. This book is the 6th best seller in English Language.
This novel shows the treatment of people to horse in Victorian England. This story is written from Black Beauty’s perspective and shows how horses suffer on the hands of human beings. How human treat horses like machine or object and some harsh procedures like cutting off the tail of horses.
Toss Coslett says that this story reminds him of the people he serves. This story shows the horse which has emotions like happiness, love and loyalty just like human beings. He says that enough through this is not the first novel to written in animal biography style but it truly allows the readers to slide in and out of unconsciousness mind of animals.
Soon after the publication of this novel many readers from around the world wanted to see the reforms that would work for well-being of horses and will try to reduce pain of the horses.
Just within 2 years of publication of this novel one million copies were sold. Groups all around the world which were working on animals rights also disturbed this novel for awareness. Several films have been made based on this novel.

This is indeed one of the best novels of its time. Author Anna chose a unique topic for her novel. She wanted world to understand that animals also feel pain just like any human beings therefore they should be treated kindly. People used to treat animals very harshly at that time and she actually spoke for animals in the form of biography. Many animal activist groups also used this novel for their purpose.
