novel was written in Portuguese language in the year 1988. In 1993 this novel
was translated in English language by Harper Torch, theme of this novel is

in 1990.

The plot of this novel includes an Andalusian Boy, Santiago, who
continuously sees a dream and believe that it’s prophetic. He travels to a
nearby town to meet a Romani fortune teller in order to know the meaning f his
dream. The fortune teller interprets the dream as a prophecy, which is telling
him that there is a treasure hidden in the pyramids of Egypt. He starts his
journey towards Egypt. During his journey he meets a King named Melchizedek.
King tells Santiago to sell his sheep so that he can travel to Egypt. He also
introduces the idea of a personal legend according to which “Your Personal
Legend is you have always wasted to accomplish and when want something, the
entire universe conspires in helping you to achieve it”. This personal legend
is the theme of this novel. During his journey he travels through Sahara desert
where he falls in love with an Arabian Women, Fatima. He proposes her for
marriage but she refuses saying that she will marry him after finds the
treasure. He was perplexed with her answer. Later he learns that true love will
not ask someone to sacrifice his or hers own personal legend and if does, it is
not true love. The main theme of this novel is actually this quote, which shows
the real power of passion, dreams, goals and desires. Because of this theme
“The New York Times” said that this novel is more about self-help than
literature.
The publisher of this novel told that this was never going to
sell; he said that Coelho can actually make more in stock exchange instead of
writing.
An Australian Newspaper, The advertiser published its reviews on
this book. This book was declared best book in the review. After that this
novel was praised by a lot of people. This novel has won many awards in Germany
and Italy. People from South Africa, Turkey and Finland have called it a
charming story and a wonderful tale.
Since its publication this book has been appreciated throughout
the world. At the time of publication no one even knew about this. Even the
publisher told the author that he could earn more money in stock exchange.
Author was so convinced that this book will become popular, he was even ready
to knock every door for his book. This book became popular in 1990’s; the
reason of popularity of this book is its theme which focuses on passion and
