Nikolay Strakhor also said that this novel was the sensation of 1866.

Along with its fame, this novel was soon criticized by different people. After the publication of this novel G.Z Yeliseyer came forward for the support and defense of Russian student’s federation. He said that has there been even a single case of Russian student committing a crime and murder just for cash and money.

Pisarev was fully aware of the critic’s value of this novel. Instead of criticizing this novel he said that the theme of this novel is to put light on a problem which occurs because of poverty. Pisarev appreciated the accuracy by which social reality was explained in this novel. Strakhor rejected Pisarev’s theory and said that author is showing sympathy attitude towards his hero, instead of the fact that hero committed a murder.

This Russian novel was translated in English by Frederick Whishaw in 1885, Constance Garnett in 1914, David Magarshack in 1951, Princess Alexandra, Jesse Coulson, Michael Scammel, Sidney Monas, Julius Katzer, David McDuff and Oliver Ready.

This is one of the greatest novels of its time. Modern readers think that this novel is too old or out of date can also read it. This novel is a classic, fascination and original crime novel, which will engage its readers till the end.

Human psychology is explained very deeply in this novel. The characters are divided into good and bad human beings. This novel explains the desires, dreams, fears and motivations of its characters. The psychology explained in this novel is superb, not denying the fact that novel was written before the development of modern psychology, even before Freud and Jung were published.

Along with its qualities like explanation of psychology this novel is a modern day novel. Once you started it, you will not be able to stop until you reach the end. The only problem with this novel is the use of the names. Names are very long, sometimes first and sometimes last name have been used, which can be very confusing but once you manage to get the names, you will easily understand this novel and will enjoy and love it.
